Mic test

Check that your microphone is detected, loud enough, and recording cleanly. Use the live meter first, then record a short clip and play it back before a call or upload.

Watch the live counter. It stays at zero for media uploads while you run a mic, camera, or speaker check.

Verify it yourself. Open DevTools, choose Network, run a test, and look for uploads. In Chrome or Edge press Ctrl+Shift+I. In Firefox press Ctrl+Shift+E.

Advanced settings

What the meter tells you

The meter watches the microphone signal in real time and turns it into plain-language states: silent, very quiet, healthy, or clipping. If the meter barely moves, check the browser permission, selected device, operating-system input level, and any hardware mute switch on the microphone or headset.

A healthy signal normally moves when you speak at normal distance and does not hit the clipping warning. Clipping means the input is too hot and can sound harsh or distorted in meeting apps.

Record and play back

The recording control helps you hear what others are likely to hear. Browser recording formats vary, so MicAndCam chooses the first supported format at runtime instead of assuming one file type. Chrome and Firefox usually prefer WebM with Opus audio; Safari often prefers an MP4 or M4A-style recording.

The download link is created from a local blob URL. It is useful for comparing microphones, checking a headset after a driver update, or keeping a short before-and-after sample while changing app settings.

App and device checks

Before Zoom, Teams, or Discord, confirm the same microphone is selected here and in the app. If one app works and another does not, the device itself is probably fine and the issue is usually an app input setting, noise suppression setting, or operating-system privacy permission.

On phones and tablets, close other camera or calling apps before testing. Mobile browsers can be stricter about background tabs and device switching.

FAQ

Why is my microphone volume zero?

Check the physical mute switch, operating-system input level, browser permission, and selected input device. On Windows 11, also check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.

Can I hear myself live?

Yes, but only after you confirm you are using headphones. Playing the microphone through laptop speakers can create loud feedback.

How do I test my mic before Discord, Teams, or Zoom?

Run the meter, record a short clip, play it back, then pick the same input device inside the meeting app. If the clip sounds good here, focus on the app's input and noise-processing settings.

How do I fix microphone permission on Windows 11?

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, turn on microphone access, and make sure desktop apps can use the microphone. Then return to the browser, use the address-bar permission icon, and allow microphone access for this site.

Why does my iPhone mic test stop after I switch apps?

iPhone Safari can pause active device streams when the page is backgrounded. Return to Safari, press Stop if needed, then start the microphone again from the page button.

How do I test an Android Chrome microphone?

Start the mic test, allow the browser prompt, and speak normally. If it stays silent, check Android Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions and confirm the microphone is allowed.

Why is my headset mic not listed?

Reconnect the headset, wait for Bluetooth or USB audio to settle, then reload the page. Some browsers show generic labels until permission is granted, so start once and check the picker again.

Is an online mic or webcam test safe and private?

It can be when the tool runs locally. MicAndCam analyzes microphone levels, camera preview, snapshots, and recordings in your browser and does not upload media. You can verify this with the live counter or your browser's Network panel.

Why does the browser ask for permission?

Browsers require a clear permission prompt before any page can use your microphone or camera. MicAndCam waits for your click, asks only for the device needed by the tool, and stops tracks when you leave or press stop.

Is my audio or video uploaded?

No. The microphone meter, webcam preview, snapshots, and recordings are created in your browser. They are not uploaded to MicAndCam, Google, or any other service.
