Speaker controls

Ready

Start low, especially with headphones; steady tones can sound sharper than speech.

Left, right, and both

The most useful speaker test is simple: play left, play right, then play both. If the left and right buttons sound reversed, check headphone orientation, cable seating, audio interface routing, or operating-system balance settings.

The tone is generated by the browser with Web Audio. It is not a licensed audio sample, it is not streamed, and it does not require a network request after the page has loaded.

Safe volume first

Start at a low volume, especially with headphones. A test tone can feel louder than speech because it is steady and focused at one frequency. Raise the volume only after you know the output path is correct.

Bluetooth headphones can take a moment to wake up or switch modes. If the first tone is silent, wait a second, check the output device in your operating system, and try again.

Output selection

Some Chromium browsers expose output-device selection to web pages. When that feature is available, MicAndCam shows an output picker. In other browsers, choose the speaker or headphones in your operating system instead.

For meeting apps, test the same output device inside the app as well. A system-level speaker can work while an app is still set to a disconnected headset.

FAQ

How do I test headphones?

Put the headphones on at low volume, play left, play right, then both. If the channels are reversed, check the orientation or the device balance setting.

Why can't I hear the speaker test?

Check system volume, the selected output device, Bluetooth connection state, browser tab mute, and the physical volume on speakers or headphones.

Can I choose a different output device?

Only in browsers that support output-device selection for web audio. If the picker is hidden, change output in your operating system.

Is the speaker tone uploaded or streamed?

No. The tone is generated locally by the browser.

Why is the first Bluetooth tone silent?

Bluetooth headphones and speakers can take a moment to wake or switch audio profiles. Wait a second, confirm the device is selected in your operating system, and play the tone again.

Can I test phone speakers?

Yes. Open the speaker test in a mobile browser and use the Both button first at low volume. Some phones route audio differently when silent mode, Bluetooth, or a call mode is active.

How do I check left and right balance?

Play Left, then Right, then Both. If one side is quieter, check operating-system balance settings, the headphone cable, audio interface routing, or the app output device.

Why is the output picker missing?

Only some Chromium browsers expose output-device selection to web pages. If the picker is hidden, choose the speaker, headphones, or Bluetooth device in your operating system.
