Idle
Your browser asks for camera permission only after Start.
A webcam can be detected by the computer but still look wrong in a real call. The preview helps you check framing, lighting, focus, orientation, and whether the selected camera is the one you meant to use.
Mirror mode is on by default because that feels natural for positioning yourself. Turning mirror mode off shows the non-mirrored view that many other people or recording tools may receive.
Snapshot and camera details
The snapshot button draws the current video frame to a canvas and creates a local download. It is a quick way to check whether the preview is actually rendering, whether lighting is readable, and whether the lens is clean.
Where the browser provides them, MicAndCam shows the returned camera width, height, frame rate, aspect ratio, and facing mode. These values come from the active media track, so they reflect what the browser actually gave the page rather than marketing specs on a box.
When the camera is black or blocked
A black preview can come from a covered lens, another app holding the camera, a blocked browser permission, or the wrong camera being selected. Stop the stream here, close calling apps, choose another device, and start again.
On iPhone and iPad, browser camera previews need inline playback behavior. MicAndCam marks previews for inline, muted playback and stops tracks cleanly when the page is hidden.
FAQ
How do I switch cameras?
Use the camera picker after the first permission grant. Some browsers hide real device names until permission is granted, so labels may improve after the stream starts.
Why is my webcam blocked?
Look for the camera icon in the address bar, allow camera access for this site, then retry. Also check operating-system privacy settings and close apps that may already be using the camera.
Can I test my webcam for Zoom or Teams?
Yes. Confirm the preview here, then select the same camera inside Zoom or Teams. If this preview works but the meeting app does not, the app setting is the likely place to fix.
Why is the preview black after permission is allowed?
Check for a covered lens, another app already using the camera, a virtual camera that is outputting black, or a hardware privacy shutter. Stop the stream, close calling apps, choose another camera, and start again.
How do I choose a laptop camera instead of an external webcam?
Grant permission once, then use the camera picker. Built-in and external cameras often get clearer names only after the first permission grant.
Why does my webcam look blurry or grainy?
Try more light, clean the lens, and move closer to the camera. Many browsers start at a practical 720p-style setting, so low light can make the image look softer than the camera's advertised maximum.
Does mirror mode change what other people see?
Mirror mode only changes the preview on this page. It helps you frame yourself, but meeting apps may send either a mirrored preview or a non-mirrored camera feed depending on their own settings.
Is an online mic or webcam test safe and private?
It can be when the tool runs locally. MicAndCam analyzes microphone levels, camera preview, snapshots, and recordings in your browser and does not upload media. You can verify this with the live counter or your browser's Network panel.
Why does the browser ask for permission?
Browsers require a clear permission prompt before any page can use your microphone or camera. MicAndCam waits for your click, asks only for the device needed by the tool, and stops tracks when you leave or press stop.
Is my audio or video uploaded?
No. The microphone meter, webcam preview, snapshots, and recordings are created in your browser. They are not uploaded to MicAndCam, Google, or any other service.
